The use of forage plants adapted to the disturbed humid tropical forest ecosystem is presently the most economically feasible alternative for the improvement of cultivated pasture productivity in these areas. Sixty five ecotypes of forage legumes were tested and evaluated in the Paragominas region, in the eastern Brazilian Amazon, trom 1981 to 1983, to determine their adaptation to the local conditions of soil and clirnate. The initial germination, degree of envlronrnental adaptation, damage due to pests and diseases as well as ary rnatter production for the maximal and minimal rainfall period were measured. The genus Centrosema showed the greatest number of viable ecotypes, C. macrocarpum CIAT 5065 being the most promising one. For the other genera, the ecotypes with the greatest potential were Desmodium ova/ifo/ium CIAT 350, D. canum CIAT 3522, guianensis CIAT 184 and CIAT 136, Pueraria pheseoloides CIAT 9900 and common Ca/opogonium mucunoides. Antrhacnose attacks were not limiting to S. spp. Additional data of forage quality and adaptation to grazing is needed to make the promising ecotypes feasible to be used by the farmers. No tropico umido brasileiro, de um modo geral, as pastagens de gramineas cultivadas em terra firme apresentam baixa produti
